Pi Theatre, in association with, Tant per Tant Saskatoon, PTC Vancouver and Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal present: Catalan Connection.
Exploratory readings of plays by three dynamic new voices from Catalonia, Spain.
The primary purpose of this project is to introduce playwrights and their work to audiences and theatre professionals in the international arena and to create interest in producing their plays. We will co-present three discovery readings of three Catalan plays in Vancouver. The plays will also be read in Saskatoon and Montreal and next year three Canadian plays will be read in three Catalan cities.
Key to the goals of the project is to fly the playwrights from their home country to the discovery readings, both for the experience of seeing the play and to create interest in the individual. Each of the communities will employ a professional cast to rehearse the readings. The directors for the readings in Vancouver will include Pi Theatre Artistic Associate Adam Henderson, PTC Dramaturg & Acting Executive Director Heidi Taylor and Tant per Tant Artistic Director Tom Bentley-Fisher. The scripts are translated into English by Elisabet Ràfols with Tom Bentley-Fisher.
The plays include:
Buffalos by Pau Miró
Girls Shouldn’t Play Soccer by Marta Buchaca
Far from Nuuk by Pere Riera
Come and meet the playwrights and engage with their unique worldviews.
Catalan Connection is presented free of charge.

“In Pere Riera’s Far from Nuuk, there is an intensity at a place where horror and humour are solidly bound.”
“I left with the feeling of having seen something very powerful, bringing to mind Tennessee Williams.”
Begoña Barrena, El País
“Pere Riera reflects the wolf inside us all with style.”
Carme Tierz, Time Out Barcelona
“The tension in Marta Buchaca’s overwhelming story increases through a plot full of well established turns, contradictory information and passionate accusations.
Cesar Lopez Rosell - El Periodico
“Buchaca creates impeccable intrigue in a box of dynamite that is a hospital waiting room.
An X-Ray of the sickly individualism characteristic of the contemporary world, where anybody can judge their neighbor just by their appearance, motivated by the mountain of prejudices we carry.”
Francesc Massip - AVUI
“Buffalos is a text charged with expressive strength and poetic breath that marks a breakthrough in Miró’s interesting trajectory. ”
Francesc Massip, AVUI
“This year will probably be the Pau Miró year, a playwright who is having a great success both inside and outside Catalonia. People who don’t yet know Pau Miró will have the great privilege of discovering one of the most interesting authors of his generation.”
Marta Cervera - El Periodico
